Paul Manhardt

Residency: 1920

Paul Manhardt was born in Milwaukee, WI on Sept. 24, 1885 and ran a barber shop and bowling alley in that city.  He came to Vilas County in June 1920 and purchased the William Radue summer home on Big St. Germain Lake.  This was on part of the land that also held Radue's Resort.  William had sold the resort part to a person who's last name was Voek.  Nothing else is known about Voeke.  In 1923 Paul purchased Voek's Resort (Radue's Resort) which had been built by William Radue.  This consisted of a main lodge and four cottages, which Paul renamed Clear View Lodge (in time Clear View merges together into one word).

Date deceased 1954
Cause of death: Unknown
Interment: Plum Lake Cemetery

Helen Maris

Residency: 1975

Helen was married to Henry "Hank" Maris.  She died from medical malpractice.  After she had surgery and went home, she began to feel sickly.  It grew worse and worse, but the doctor could not find out what was wrong.  She was suffering and in agony in spite of pain medications and her doctor ordered exploratory surgery.  During the surgery it was found that a sponge had been left in her from the earlier surgery.  By then it was too late and she died from a massive infection.

Date deceased: Late 1980's
Cause of death: Surgical malpractice
Interment: St. Germain Cemetery

Henry was known as "Hank" and he was employed by Northland Pines School District as a custodian for many years (retired).  When his wife, Helen, passed away because of a botched surgery, he was asked by some in town if he was going to sue.  His reply was "I am not a sewer(sic).  My grief and sorrow are not so shallow that the balm of money will sooth it over."

Yes, he said, "sewer," and spelled it this way.  He added that the pronunciation fit those kind of people well.  We agree with Hank and so do many others!  He took his wife's death quite hard and it took much time along with the support of many of the townspeople for him to recover.

Arno May was a long-time resident of St. Germain and well-liked by young and old.  He occasionally played Santa Claus for the red brick grade school.  One year, as he was playing Santa in the classrooms, someone came along and moved his street pants, not realizing who's they were or why they were there.  He had to go home in his Santa pants.

"Santa lost his pants!" became the rallying cry among the children as they searched here and there.  The pants were finally found and returned to him.
