and inducted in the Guides' Hall of Fame in Hayward, WI. He was
born and raised on his father's (Charles
Dean) resort on Found Lake and was a brother to
Porter
and Forrest Dean. He began guiding around age 14 for candy and
pop which is how he acquired the name "Pop" Dean. He suffered a
major heart attack in 1966 and he had to quit guiding.
He and his wife, Ole
(Viola Dean), started a
gift shop filled with his and his wife's handmade gifts
from jewelry to deer leather coats and jackets.
Pop hand carved loons, fishing lures, and made other
crafty things to sell. He was also well known for

people brought their fish to Pop. He worked on the

sold many of them. Pop's brother,
Porter, wore a deerskin coat that
was ankle-length, even though he was always barefoot during
summer and winter. After Pop passed away, Ole moved to Florida
to live with one of her sons.

William DeGraves
Residency: 1975
Known as "Iron Bill," he worked on the
high beams for Bolt
Construction, so he was often working out of the area. When he
first started working for Bolt the workers nicknamed him "Diver"
because he fell off the high beams so much when he first started
working. He would be saved by landing in the safety nets far
below. According to him, landing in the safety nets was not so
great because they accumulated small pieces of metal and metal
shavings. When he would land in the net, he would be bounced
around and cut and slashed by the metal. He was well-known in
this area and spent much time here recuperating from a 2.5-ton
steel plate that fell on him while working. Once able to work
